Amethyst Madonnas, also called Amethyst Cathedrals, are Amethyst Geodes that have been carefully cut in half to display the beautiful crystals within. A semi-precious stone, it is a purple variety of quartz and owes its violet colour to irradiation. Irradiation are impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals. This results in complex crystal lattice substitutions. The hardness of the mineral is the same as quartz. Making it suitable for use in jewellery and other applications.
