Brown Amethyst Madonnas, also called Amethyst Cathedrals, are Amethyst Geodes that have been carefully cut in half to display the beautiful crystals within. Amethyst, a semiprecious stone, is a pinky brown variety of quartz and owes its colour to irradiation, impurities of iron and in some cases other transition metals, which result in complex crystal lattice substitutions. The hardness of the mineral is the same as quartz, thus making it suitable for use in jewellery and other applications.
